More and more people today begin to understand that study does not end with a school graduation. Education is not just a middle school diploma or a college degree; it is life itself. Many people are not interested in studying at a college, and they are interested in other kinds of learning. They may go to a training class of their own field; they may improve their work skills by following television courses; they may even learn on Internet classes. They certainly know that if they know more or learn more, they can get better jobs or earn more money.

In this part of the unit we provide you with some background material which you may find useful when communicating with English-speaking people. Here is a passage talking about first aid and services in china.
In recent years, Chinese has been making great efforts to provide high-quality first aid and services to Chinese people from other countries as well. Among all the facilities. China Emergency Medical Center has the longest history and is the most well-know to Chinese people. It was founded in 1989 and has set up a nation-wide network for first aid. In any city of china, people can call 120 for first aid services. The Center recently has got equipped with helicopters so that timely help can reach patients in distant areas.

Other facilities of first aid include 999 and SOS, etc…Besides 120, people in Beijing can also call another emergency center at 999 for first aid. It’s a hotline of the Red Cross Society of China. It’s well-equipped and owns around 80 ambulances. It can handle emergencies efficiently.

Also, people from other countries can contact the “alarm center” of SOS International in Beijing and Shanghai for first aid. It operates 24 hours and gives customers advice and referrals to local hospital.

In addition to various first aid centers, more and more shopping malls and department stores in some major cities in China begin to provide basic first-aid services in order to make sure shoppers can get an immediate help in emergencies. They prepare first-aid kits for shoppers. Some are equipped with a first-aid counter, first-aid pamphlets and stretchers.

On the other hand, more and more people have better knowledge about first aid. Organizations such as the Red Cross Society of China carry out programs to train the basic first aid skills and popularize health knowledge among people in order to avoid misbehaviours in emergencies. People from other countries certainly should feel safe for their visit to China.

Beijing opera is the national opera. There are also many other local traditional operas. Such as Cantonese opera, Shaoxing opera, Kun opera and Pingju.
2. Chinese traditional dance
Chinese dance has forms of its own. It includes forms such as folk dance and Chinese ballet, etc.
3. Chinese traditional music
In order to play traditional music, we need traditional musical instruments such as pipa, zheng, and so on.
4. Teahouse and the Tao of the tea.
Chinese people like tea, just like French people wine and Cubans like tobacco. The Tao of the tea needs a lot of efforts and is especially for Oolong tea. The Tao of the tea can help people calm down in the busy modern life.
5. Folk art forms
In addition to cross talk and storytelling, other folk art forms such as Suzhou dialect balled singing and Beijing musical storytelling are also well-liked by Chinese people. In addition, forms like acrobatics and shadow are also famous.
On the other hand, modern forms of entertainment develop very quickly in China. People in China can enjoy movies and TV series produced by China and other countries, as well. Famous singing and dancing troupes all over the world come to China for performance. More and more people go to theatres to enjoy modern drama. China is connected with the rest of the world more and more closely.

Welcome to Beijing, friend. As it’ll take us half an hour by coach to get to our hotel from the airport, I wish to avail myself of this opportunity to submit to you a brief introduction to Beijing.
Capital of the People’s Republic of China, Beijing is the country’s political and cultural center and a communication pivot. To its north and west stands a chain of imposing mountains and hills, and to its south and east lies a vast expanse of plain. The capital has a total area of over 17, 800 square kilometres and a population of over 10 million.
The city of Beijing has a long history. From the beginning of the 10th century it was first the auxiliary capital of the Liao dynasty and then the capital of several dynasties – Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing.
Here, the labouring people have in the course of many centuries created a culture of great splendour. In the urban area and on the outskirts, there is a wealth of ancient relics and graceful-looking imperial gardens, such as the place Museum, the Summer Place, Badaling, the Temple of Heaven, the Ming Tombs, Beihai Park and site of the living quarters of ‘Beijing Apemen’ at Zhoukoudian. All these places have been either excavated or newly renovated. In addition, new museum of various types have been built.
Today, Beijing has further demonstrated its youthful vigor and is a scene of growing prosperity.

Here in Beijing we have four seasons a year. March to may is spring. It’s a warm and beautiful season with flowers everywhere. But it’s also a very windy time. Sandstorm or duststorm is nothing new to Beijings. Our summer is from June to August. It’s very hot, except when it rains. But it becomes hot and humid again after the rain. People carry umbrellas for the rain and the sun, many people turn on their air conditioners and stay indoors to get away from the heat. I think the best time here is autumn, which is from September to November. It’s cool and suitable for camping, mountain-climbing and travelling. Autumn is my favourite season. Winter is from December to February. It is very cold and snows a lot. I don’t like winter in Beijing at all.

Exercise
Talk about you favourite season and give your reasons
People have different activities in different seasons. They enjoy the happiness of ice and snow world in winter, going skiing and skating, making snowmen and throwing snowballs at each other, if they dislike the cold, they can stay indoors or travel to a warmer place. In spring and autumn, people have more outdoor activities. They go to parks, fly kites, go camping or mountain-climbing. In summer, people enjoy sunshine on the beach, or go swimming. Whatever the season is, people can choose their activities according to their preferences.

Exercise
Talk about your favourite activities in the four seasons.
Background Knowledge
China lies in temperate zone and the climate as a whole is mild, although it varies from place to place. The monsoon climate is a distinctive feature as the mainland faces the Pacific. It is summer all the year round on the Leizhou Peninsula of Guangdong. On the Hainan Island and the South China Sea Island. On the other hand, the Heilongjiang area in the northeast has short summer and long winter, where the climate is frigid and the snow and ice are everywhere in winter. There are big temperature change in Xinjiang and Gansu in the northwest. Down in Kunming and its surroundings in Yunnan Province in southwest, however, the local know no hot summer nor cold winter. Kunming is thus called the ‘City of Spring’.
Temperature differs greatly between the north and the south in winter, but not so in summer. Rain coat is a must in the southeast and central south while wind-breaker is a must in the windy north in spring.

But it was fourth in the number of gold medals won at the Olympic Games in both Barcelona and Atlanta. Chinese swimmer did exceptionally well. For the first time in China’s history Sun Fuming won China’s first gold medal in judo, beating Cub’s Estella Rodriguez in the women’s heavyweight class final. China also did extremely well in table tennis, winning six gold medals in two Olympics. China won all four gold medals in table tennis in Atlanta.

At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, China did even better coming in third place with the most medals won at the Games. They brought home 28 gold medals, a great improvement compared to the 16 they won in Atlanta.

Barcelona – Olympic City
The city of Barcelona has been linked with the Olympic Movement for many years. In 1920, it first offered to organize the games and repeated its invitation in 1931 and 1966. it finally won the bid for hosting the 1992’s Olympics Games.

The Olympic facilities are excellent. They are all within five kilometers of each other and are linked by good roads through the city. The Montjuic area will hold up to 7 sports finals and the Communications Media Center is equipped to offer its services to 10, 000 journalists. The Olympic Stadium is being rebuilt for track and fields events and will have a capacity of 80, 000 spectators. The Sports Place has a capacity of 17, 000 people and will hold the competitions in gymnastics, swimming, volleyball, basketball and wrestling. The Diagonal area is holding several preliminary competitions. There are also a number of first-class hotels in this area.

Work will begin very soon on the Olympic Village where competitors stay in Parc de Mar. No less than three-quarters of the facilities needed to hold the Olympic Games in Barcelona have already been built.
